Get a fitness regime going. Tailor it to suit your needs and make it fun to do.
Start by getting a dog or maybe two. I have a labradoodle and a westypoodle and they are always keen to exercise me with a walk up the hill and through the woods. I suspect their quest for rabbits to chase is foremost on their minds though.
Go to yoga classes. Hatha is the best for us and the best instructor in Parksville is Penny McGuire. Three times a week is plenty and you can practice at home. Get a Yoga DVD.
Tai Chi is supposed to be very beneficial. I have just started classes so the jury is still out on that one-but everyone I have met swears by it. And anyone can do it.
Join a local gym. I use Jim's Gym in Parksville where they have the most up to date equipment around. Cardio workout on an eliptical trainer and weight training really helps.
Join our own support group's exercise club run by Doug Pickard, a local personal trainer. Doug has taken a special interest in Parkinson's and the entire program is tailored to our needs. Doug recommends getting a Wii Sport with the balance board so you can work out at home. You will also have something to entertain the grand kids when they come to visit.
Try a weekly massage. I can certify that it really helps and Crystal Stauch of Oceanside Massage has very reasonable rates and will even come to your house.I am helping her to develop the best massage for people with Parkinson's. If you are really lucky your carer will be a masseuse and you can have a massage twice a day.
Get a bike and use it. It's great for cardio and of course balance. A bike is useful transport to get to your exercise classes too.
Go swimming. I don't but I should. There is a swimming hole in the Englishman River I could walk to. There is no better exercise.
There are plenty of other things you can do for exercise. Golf is good but I think my skills are slipping a bit. Last time I went to a driving range I chewed it up a bit. My swing just isn't the same any more.
So get up and go. It is a well known fact that exercise is good for everyone. Especially us with Parkison's.
At our October meeting we had a visit by an old friend, Doug Pickard, a fitness instructor who has a special interest in Parkinsons patients. Doug runs a customized gym every Thursday afternoon at 1.15pm at the Shelly rd Hall in Parksville. Great value and lots of fun. Doug has also set up his own web site with lots of information for those with PD. It is included in the links to other sites page....worth a look. (www.tamingthedragon.weebly.com) Thanks Doug.
